Food Allergies

Have you ever experienced an itchy mouth or throat after eating cantaloupe?  Have you ever had a runny nose after snacking on an apple?  You may have Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS).  Sometimes your body’s immune system will recognize proteins on raw fruits, vegetables, or nuts, similar to certain pollens.  Even if the proteins are not identical, they can be similar enough to confuse your immune system.

The main symptoms are swelling in the tongue, mouth or throat; an itchy mouth or ears; or a scratchy throat after eating raw fruits, vegetables or nuts.  The irritation usually resolves quickly, and does not require any treatment.  However, in some cases, the reactions can progress to life-threatening.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms or have experienced these symptoms in the past, there are tests to help identify the specific food or foods that may be causing this. The more information you provide prior to seeing your Doctor, the quicker your Doctor may be able to help in the proper testing and identification of the food(s) involved.

If you suspect you may have a food allergy, it is best to avoid the foods you believe may be causing it, as well as talking about this with your health care provider.
