Beat the Heat - Safety Tips for Everyone

 

  • Stay Well Hydrated- Drink a lot of fluids. Water, juice, and sports drinks are recommended.
  • Stay Covered Up- Always use sunscreen with a minimum 15 spf or higher.  You will stay cooler if you wear loose, light colored clothing and a large brimmed hat or sun visor.
  • Limit Activity During the Hottest Part of the Day- Try to avoid participating in outdoor activity during midday, which is the hottest part of the day. Pace yourself if you are exercising in the heat.
  • If Indoors, Keep Your House Well Ventilated- If you are indoors and do not have air-conditioning, open your windows early to get the cool air in and use fans to circulate the air.
  • Don’t Delay Getting Help for Symptoms- If you think yourself or someone else might be suffering from a heat-related illness such as heat stroke, dehydration, etc. move to a cooler place, lie down, drink some fluids, and call 911.

 

 

Beat the Heat - Safety Tips for Children

 

Good News, with a little prevention, heat related illnesses are preventable.  Here are a few tips to help your child stay healthy this Season.

 

  • Getting Acclimated:  The key to keeping kids from getting dehydrated is to slowly get them used to the heat while staying hydrated. Spending time outdoors, playing in the heat, riding bikes, doing yard work, etc. to build up their bodies to handle the heat.  Make sure they have regular breaks and drink plenty of fluids. Water and sports drinks are recommended.
  • Drink Fluids:  Make sure your child drinks plenty of cool, plain water or sports drinks to stay completely hydrated.  Regular breaks to drink fluids should be scheduled, even if your child is not thirsty.  Regular fruit juice and soft drinks or carbonated drinks are not recommended as they do not re-hydrate the body.
  • Know about Sports Drinks: Sports drinks can be used to keep your child hydrated. In fact, children will often drink more because of the taste.  Check the label and select a sports drink that meets these guidelines for active children: Eight ounces of a sports drink should contain at least 100 milligrams of sodium and at least 28 milligrams of potassium. It should also be non-carbonated.

 

Beat the Heat - Safety Tips for Pets

 

  • Stay Hydrated - Just like people, pets are stressed by the heat and it is important to make an extra effort to keep all your pets, dogs, cats, and other critters, cool, comfortable and hydrated.
  • Keep your pet’s emergency information with you and updated at all times-  Make sure to have your veterinarian’s phone number, or the address of the nearest emergency clinic.
  • Never leave an animal in a parked car -  If it’s 80 degrees outside, your car can heat up to 120 degrees in just a few minutes.  Leaving the windows partially rolled down, “just for a minute” will still leave your pet at risk for heat stroke.
