What Parents Need to Know About Bedwetting...

Nocturnal Enuresis (the medical name for bedwetting):

Nocturnal enuresis is urination that happens at night during sleep after the age when a child should be able to control his or her bladder.

Did you know bedwetting often runs in families?

Children who wet the bed usually have a parent that wet also as a child. If one parent wet the bed as a child there is a 40% chance of the child doing the same and a 75% chance for the child to wet the bed if both parents wet as a child.

Surviving Bedwetting…

Children will usually grow out of wetting the bed on their own. If your child has not grown out of wetting yet, it can be making them uncomfortable and self-conscious. It is very important to show support and positive reinforcement during this process.

Make sure your child knows that bedwetting is a normal part of growing up, and other family members have struggled with the same issue when they were young.

When should you call the Doctor?

  • If bedwetting starts suddenly or you notice other medical symptoms can be a sign of another medical condition. Your medical provider may want to check for Urinary Tract Infection (UTI), constipation, bladder issues, diabetes or even severe stress that may have caused the change.
  • Suddenly starts wetting the bed after being consistently dry for at least 6 months
  • Begins to wet during the day while awake
  • Snores at night
  • Complains of a burning sensation or pain when urinating
  • Has to pee frequently
  • Is drinking or eating much more than usual
  • Has swelling of the feet or ankles
  • Is 7 years old or older and still wetting the bed
